Gruff Wikia

Trolls originally blocked the path to The Betwixt until the Three Billy Goat Gruffs killed one and sparked the beginning of the Troll Wars. They were hunted unto extinction, or so the Shepherds thought. Now the trolls march once again and they thirst for revenge.

Trolls bring two new modes of play to Gruff: Solo and Cooperative battles.

Anatomy of a Troll[]

Trolls count as both Gruffs and Shepherds for the purpose of card effects except for the following:

  • They are immune to death/instant kill effects such as Skulldozer's Death. They can only be killed via Damage.
  • They never have a "hand" so discard effects such as Twiddle's Awe have no effect.
  • They have no draw deck, therefore cards like Buttons' Psychic Strike cannot affect them.

Rage[]

Rage counts as the Troll's Weird, Crazy and Mean. Rage defines not only how the Troll will act in a given round (see Behavior Cards below) but also how much Damage it will deal when attacking.

Fat[]

Defines how much Defense the Troll has. It reduces the amount of Damage a Troll receives when attacked.

Facing[]

A Troll can be in one of the three middle positions of the board. Attacks can either be direct (attacking in the same lane as the Troll's current position) or on the side (left or right of the Troll's current position). Trolls generally receive a Defense bonus when attacked on the side.

Life[]

The amount of Damage the Troll must be dealt to win the game!

Threshold[]

Just like Shepherds some Trolls may have Thresholds which trigger special abilities once enough Life is lost.

Behavior Cards[]

The actions a Troll will take during a turn (such as moving or attacking) are defined by his Behavior Cards. Each card has a number of different abilities with a Rage cost and type attached to them. Abilities are executed from top to bottom up to the Troll's current Rage score. These abilities will always have a type:

  • Tactical (Purple): These are analogous to Gruffs' Tactical Actions.
  • Action (Orange): Same effect as Action cards.
  • Condition (Blue): Same effect as Condition cards.
  • Mutation (Green): Puts Mutation Tokens in play.

Note: Each ability on a Troll's behavior card is considered a separate effect and is interacted with separately. For example, if the Troll's Rage indicates two Conditions were triggered on it's behavior card a Dissect will destroy one of these abilities, not the entire behavior card.
